One Day Africa: The visionary

In the heart of Soweto, where historical tales echo through the streets, I am Sipho Sangweni—the visionary behind One Day Africa, a storyteller capturing the soul of my beloved township. Join me on a journey born from art, fuelled by culture, and inspired by the resilience of a community that turns adversity into artistry. As a proud Sowetan, and a photographer my lens doesn't just capture moments; it narrates the untold stories etched in the very fabric of Orlando West. This is more than a story; it's a visual symphony, a testament to the spirit that transforms 'nothing' into 'everything.'"

I was born and raised in Orlando West, Soweto, where my family still resides. Growing up, I was fascinated by the stories of my elders, who witnessed the events that shaped our history. I was also inspired by the creativity and resilience of my peers, who expressed themselves through music, dance, and art.

During university I started taking photos, as a way of capturing the beauty and diversity of Soweto. I soon realized that photography was more than just a hobby; it was a tool for social change. I wanted to use my camera to tell the stories of my community, and to challenge the stereotypes and misconceptions that outsiders had about Soweto.

I started offering walking tours of Soweto to my friends and family, who wanted to see the township through my lens. I soon realized that there was a demand for authentic and immersive experiences of Soweto, and that I could use my passion and skills to create a sustainable business that would benefit both myself and my community.

That’s how One Day Africa was born, a company that combines my love for photography, storytelling, and Soweto. I started with one tour, and now I have several, covering different aspects of Soweto’s culture and history. I also have a team of local guides, who share my vision and passion for Soweto. Together, we aim to provide the best walking tours of Soweto, and to make a positive difference in our community.

One Day Africa has grown beyond my expectations, and I am grateful for the opportunities and challenges that it has brought me. I have met amazing people from all over the world, who have become my friends and supporters. I have also expanded my horizons, and started another branch of One Day Africa in Cape Town, where I offer walking tours of the city’s hidden gems.

My dream is to continue growing One Day Africa, and to showcase the beauty and diversity of South Africa to the world. I also hope to inspire other young people from Soweto, and to show them that they can achieve their goals and dreams, no matter where they come from.
