Tour Highlights & What We Cover
Our Cape Town art, culture, and history walking tour is the perfect way to understand the Mother City on foot in just two hours. We start in the Bo-Kaap, where the cobbled streets and famously vivid houses tell the story of the Cape Malay community, then wander down historic Long Street past Victorian facades, bookshops, and buzzing cafés. At Greenmarket Square you'll browse handcrafted goods, African textiles, and local art before passing landmarks including the Slave Lodge and City Hall — with the chance to see a Nelson Mandela exhibit. The walk ends in District Six, one of the most powerful sites in Cape Town's history, where your guide shares the story of forced removals and the community's enduring resilience.
Our Local Heritage Perspective
This is Cape Town told by the people who live it. Our local guides don't just point out buildings — they connect you to the Cape Malay heritage of the Bo-Kaap, the multicultural energy of Long Street, and the difficult but essential story of apartheid-era removals in District Six. As a proudly Black-owned, locally led company, we believe travel should honour real history and real communities, so every tour is grounded in authentic storytelling rather than a rehearsed script. You'll leave with a far deeper understanding of what makes Cape Town the layered, complex, beautiful city it is.
The Story Behind the Bo-Kaap's Colours
The Bo-Kaap sits on the slopes of Signal Hill, just above the city centre, and is one of the oldest residential neighbourhoods in Cape Town. Its first houses went up in the 1760s, and many of the families who settled here descended from people brought to the Cape in slavery from present-day Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka and East Africa. Out of that history grew the Cape Malay community, with its own traditions of food, faith, language and music, which still shape the neighbourhood today. The Auwal Mosque on Dorp Street, built in 1794, is regarded as the oldest mosque in South Africa. And the famous colours? One popular story holds that the houses were painted brightly once residents were finally able to own them, as an expression of freedom. Your guide shares the stories behind the facades and what life in the Bo-Kaap looks like now, as the community works to protect its heritage from rising property prices and gentrification.
From the Slave Lodge to District Six
Beyond the Bo-Kaap, the walk traces how Cape Town grew — and who paid the price. The Slave Lodge, built in 1679, once housed enslaved people owned by the Dutch East India Company and is now a museum dedicated to that history. Greenmarket Square has been a public square and trading place since the late 1600s, and City Hall is where Nelson Mandela gave his first public speech after his release from prison on 11 February 1990. The walk ends in District Six, once a vibrant, mixed inner-city community. In 1966 the apartheid government declared it a 'whites only' area, and over the years that followed more than 60,000 residents were forcibly removed and their homes demolished. Hearing these stories on the streets where they happened gives you a far richer sense of Cape Town than any guidebook can.
Who This Walking Tour Is For
This is the ideal first-day tour in Cape Town. In two hours you'll get your bearings in the city centre, understand the history that shaped the city, and pick up tips from your guide on where to eat, shop and explore for the rest of your stay. It suits solo travellers, couples, families and friends, as well as first-time visitors and returning travellers who want to go deeper than the postcard views. Photographers will love the Bo-Kaap's colourful streets, especially in soft morning light. If you're travelling as a family, a school or a corporate group, the tour can also be booked privately, and we'll shape the pace and focus around your group.
