Tour Highlights & What We Cover

See more of Soweto in less time on this fun, open-air tuk-tuk tour through South Africa's most iconic township. Zipping along the streets by tuk-tuk lets you cover far more ground than walking while still travelling at a local, immersive pace. You'll start in Orlando West on legendary Vilakazi Street — home to both Nelson Mandela's house and Archbishop Desmond Tutu's house, the only street on earth to have housed two Nobel Peace Prize winners. From there you'll explore Orlando East and the first formal houses of Soweto, visit the family home of anti-apartheid activist Mama Lilian Ngoyi, and finish at the moving Hector Pieterson Museum, where the 1976 Soweto Uprising unfolded. Along the way you'll taste the Kota, Soweto's beloved township sandwich.

Our Local Heritage Perspective

Soweto's history is South Africa's history, and there's no better way to understand it than through the eyes of people who live it. Our tuk-tuk guides are local storytellers who grew up in these neighbourhoods and share how Soweto grew from the early 1900s, its role in the fall of apartheid, and its vibrant present-day culture. As a proudly Black-owned enterprise, we make sure your visit directly supports the community, from the drivers to the food vendors, so your day out becomes a genuine exchange rather than a drive-by.

Meeting Point & Safety Details

The tour begins at Vilakazi Espresso, 7346 Kumalo Street, Orlando West — look for the branded tuk-tuk and your guide in a One Day Africa t-shirt. Each tuk-tuk carries up to six guests and your guide-driver stays with you throughout. Because tuk-tuks are open-air, we recommend dressing for the weather with a light jacket and sun protection. The 2.5-hour experience suits most travellers, though it isn't stroller or wheelchair accessible, or recommended for those with serious back problems. Infants must sit on a parent's lap.
